Mentorship Matchup (1/2)

When you become a Seymour Speaker Toastmaster, you are given the opportunity to be matched with a mentor. Mentors are long-standing club members who can help you prepare for your first club roles and your first three speeches. They are there to help show you the ropes and be that friend in the club who you can ask questions and seek advice. We asked two of our successful mentorship matches to explain how they have benefited from the mentorship program.     Kat & Melanie - Mentorship Match Highlight Mentee's thoughts: 1. Who is your mentor?  Melanie Knight 2. What has been the most valuable aspect of having a mentor? The most valuable aspect for me personally is that my mentor, Melanie Knight,  has shared her Toast Master's experience and knowledge with me.  It is helpful to practice in front of friends or family, but an experienced Toast Master is in a much better position to give you constructive advice and guidance. 3. Tell me about what/how your mentor supported you? Melanie has been so generous with her time.  One week prior to my speech, Melanie and I would meet for coffee and she listened to me deliver my speech.  She was

Our Champion Dorothea Hendricks

Speech contests are seasonal celebrations in every Toastmasters club around the world! If you are a Toastmaster you can choose to compete in the Humorous, Evaluation, Tall Tales, Table Topics and/ or International speech contests. This year, our very own Dorothea Hendricks (our acting past President and long-standing club member for over 25 years), competed in the International Speech contest. The competition begins at the club level, and winners continue competing through the area, division and district levels. The international speech contest entails a 5-7 minute speech. This year, Dorothea's expertise, commitment, and hard work paid off... as she soared to a 2ND place at the DISTRICT level!!!! It can be very difficult to progress past the club level, let alone achieve an honour at the District level. On May 13th, 2017 at 1 pm, Dorothea gave a speech to over 300 people. She was among 8 other competitors... and she won 2nd place!!! Congratulations Dorothea - you are amazing! We absolutely LOVE having you a part of our club. You are a true mentor, support and a blast to cheer on!!! When the excitement settled, we decided to ask Dorothea the secret behind her success and the reasons why

Open House Was a Huge Success

What a fun meeting! The first open house of 2017 was a huge success! We welcomed 15 new guests to our club, and our regular members showed up in high spirits to greet, share, and make everyone feel welcome. The theme of the day was “Our Proudest Achievement”. It was so fun to hear stories about how Toastmasters has helped members achieve some of their biggest goals, and to also hear tales of adventure, self discovery, and childhood accomplishments. We did a lightning round of Table Topics, and some guests were even brave enough to take the stage! That’s what Toastmasters is all about - pushing yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. And to do all of this before 9:00am? Well that’s what makes Seymour Speakers so special. We are Vancouver’s ONLY morning club. There’s something incredibly special about getting up early, sharing laughs, stories, and reaching goals before the rest of the city wakes up. We are incredibly excited to welcome our new members to the club. You’re on your way to making 2017 the year for personal growth! And for those who want to taste a little bit more before taking a

Banner Wars! It’s on!!!

A huge thanks to Toastmasters Club Politically Speaking for inviting us to your June meeting! Five Seymour Speakers members made it on Friday night to the Advanced club who meet the first Friday of the month at Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver. What a blast! The PS members didn't hold back and had a wicked sense of humour! It didn't take long for them to work out that the SS members had a hidden agenda. We were there to take their banner!!!  It will take 5 PS members to come to our club to retrieve their banner back. Here are the "Banner Borrowing" guidelines: Banner Borrowing How do I take a banner? By taking 5 members to a club, you have the right to borrow the banner and return it to your club. How do I get my banner back? By taking 5 members to the club that borrowed your banner, you can retrieve your banner back. Why do banner borrowing? 1.
